Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) medium bombers missions
are aborted due to weather. Light bombers manage to bomb an ammunition dump. Fighter-bombers
bomb Terracina and Formia, attack bridge and several vehicles during armed reconnaissance
of Rome, Orte area, bomb Itri and Fondi, hit numerous gun positions, a railway
station, a bivouac area, and a vehicle concentration, and attack targets between
Atina and Cassino.
Fifteenth Air Force. Over 300 United States Army
Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and B-17 Flying Fortress heavy
bombers attack marshalling yard at Budapest. Fighters fly nearly 120 sorties in
support of the mission. Between 150 and 200 enemy fighters attack the heavy bombers,
shooting down 10. Heavy bombers and escorts claim over 50 aircraft destroyed in
combat.
Tenth Air Force. 120 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) fighter-bombers
and 4 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit rail lines, storage areas and Japanese
held villages around Mogaung and Myitkyina, and support ground forces near Kamaing
and Myitkyina. 80 A-31 Vengeance dive bomber's hit enemy positions East of Imphal.
During 4-
5 April 1944, 14 B-24
Liberator heavy bombers bomb Moulmein railroad yards and jetties and hit Japanese
Headquarters nearby at Nagorn Sawarn. 27 P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers and P-38
Lightning fighters attack Aungban and Anisakan airfields.
Fourteenth
Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-38 Lightning fighters on armed
reconnaissance strafe and destroy 2 big fuel dumps, 12 fuel trucks, and 15-20
troops in Wan Mong Kang area.
Fifth Air Force. 50 United States Army
Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers pound Wewak area. 12 P-39 fighters
hit villages, bridges, and wooded areas along coast from Cape Gourdon to Bogia.
Thirteenth Air Force. 12 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters
hit barge hideout in Gazelle Harbour. 10 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers (rained
out of Rabaul) bomb Buka airfield, 23 P-39 fighters hit Aitara area, and 11 P-40
fighters bomb Mamaregu barge hideout. 24 P-38 Lightning fighters pound Mamagata,
Dio Dio, and Miwo River area. Ground support missions along Empress Augusta Bay
are carried out by a variety of fighters.
Twentieth Air Force. Twentieth
Air Force is constituted and activated in Washington, DC.
Seventh Air
Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, flying
out of the Gilberts, bomb Truk during the night. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers,
from Abemema and Tarawa, follow-up during the day with raids on Ponape, Jaluit,
and Maloelap.
