Eighth Air Force. 10 jet airfields, a marshalling yard and
rail centre, an ammunition plant, and an oil storage facility
in South Central Germany are bombed by around 1,200 heavy
bombers. 15 fighters groups give close and area support.
Ninth Air Force. More than 700 United States Army Air Force
(USAAF) medium bombers and light bombers strike marshalling
yards at Jena and Saalfeld, oil targets at Bad Berka and Dedenhausen,
ordnance depots at Naumburg and Amberg, Kummersbruck, and
several targets. Fighters escort 9th Bomber Division, attack
several airfields and a fuel storage facility, fly area patrols
and armed reconnaissance, and support III Corps along Lenne
River, 3d Armoured Division East of the Weser River toward
Nordhausen, VIII Corps in Arnstadt area and XII and XX Corps
in Thuringer Forest and around Erfurt.
Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20
Havoc light bombers and A-26 Invader light bombers on intruder
missions during
8-9
April 1945, bomb bridges, vehicles, and targets in Po River
Valley and Northeast Italy. During the day B-25 Mitchell medium
bombers and XXII Tactical Air Command fighter-bombers in conjunction
with Desert Air Force (DAF) fighter-bombers and Mediterranean
Allied Strategic Air Force (MASAF) heavy bombers blast gun
positions, troop concentrations, enemy Headquarters, and strong
points in Lugo-Imola area in support of British Eighth Army
offensive. Other XXII Tactical Air Command fighter-bombers
hit command in North Italy including Brenner line and methane
plant and ammunition and fuel dumps in West Central Po Valley.
Fifteenth Air Force. 825 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and B-17 Flying Fortress heavy
bombers in close coordination with the British Eighth Army,
pound gun positions and other forward military targets Southeast
of Bologna, in the area immediately West and South West of
Lugo. 88 P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers provide target cover.
150 P-38 Lightning fighters bomb and strafe railroad bridges
at Rattenberg, Seefeld, Telfs, Rosenheim, and to the South
near Austro German border, and also hit rail lines in Munich,
Rosenheim area. Over 90 P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers escort
supply to North Italy and transport missions and support Mediterranean
Allied Tactical Air Force (MATAF) aircraft attacking positions
in Imola area. Other aeroplanes continue reconnaissance operations.
Tenth Air Force. Over 70 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
P-38 Lightning fighters and P-47 Thunderbolt fighters attack
troops, supplies, gun positions, and general targets along
and behind Central Burma battle line around Mong Pawn, Wan
Htum, Pang po, Kyawkku, Mong Hko, HanhvieMu, Laihka, and other
points. Transports complete 415 sorties to forward areas.
Fourteenth Air Force. 9 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb docks at Canton and Kowloon
and attack targets at Bakli Bay. 8 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers
bomb Sinyang railroad yards and nearby targets. 13 other B-25
Mitchell medium bombers knock out bridge North of Hsuchang
and hit various targets around Laohokow, Sichuan, Sinyang,
Likuanchiao, Lichen, and along the Han River. 19 P-51 Mustang
fighter-bombers hit targets in or near Neihsiang, Laohokow,
and Sichuan. 2 P-38 Lightning fighters blast trucks in Dien
Bien Phu area.
Far East Air Force (FEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
A-20 Havoc light bombers and fighter-bombers support ground
forces on Luzon in Balete Pass, Baguio, and Solvec Cove areas
and at several points in South West Luzon, and attack Japanese
forces in Legaspi area. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and fighter-bombers
support ground forces in Central Cebu and on Negros. Several
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers on armed reconnaissance missions
hit China and Indochina coastal targets.
Twentieth Air Force. 16 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-29 Superfortress heavy bomber's mine Shimonoseki Strait.
Seventh Air Force. 16 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers from Iwo Jima bomb and strafe
military installations at Chichi Jima during the early morning.
17 Guam based B-24 Liberator heavy bombers pound Marcus airfield
and defensive installations. 22 from Angaur hit troop concentration
at Kabacan.
Abwehr conspirators Wilhelm
Canaris, Hans Oster and Hans Dohanyi are hanged at Flossenberg
concentration camp, along with pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer.
