Eighth Air Force. On D-day for Operation STARKEY (rehearsal
for the invasion of France), Eighth Air Force dispatches a
record number of 330 heavy bombers, which attack Paris and
Beaumontsur-Oise, Beauvais, Tille, Lille, Nord, Lille, Vendeville,
Saint-Omer, Longuenesse, Saint-Omer, Fort Rouge, Abbeville,
Drucat, and Vitry-en-Artois airfields, as well as industrial
area around Paris. More than 200 medium bombers attack coastal
installations around Boulogne-sur-Mer. STARKEY is a disappointment
as Luftwaffe refuse to commit fighters defences on large scale,
thus preventing possible destruction of many of their aircraft,
which Allied air forces hoped to accomplish.
Twelfth Air Force. General Williams assumes command of XII
Troop Carrier Command (Provisional). Over 100 XII Bomber Command
B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb bridges at Capua and
Cancello Arnone, and over 240 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers
and B-26 Marauder medium bombers hit railroad bridges at Potenza
and landing ground at Scanzano. P-40 fighters fly uneventful
sweep over Sardinia. XII A Support Command fighters maintain
patrols over Salerno, and other Northwest African Tactical
Air Force (NATAF) planes bomb and strafe motor transport,
roads, and other targets in Catanzaro-Auletta-Rogliano area
and North North West of Salerno, as General Clark's Fifth
Army invades Italy, landing near Salerno (Operation AVALANCHE)
and British forces make airborne landing on heel of Italy,
taking Taranto (Operation SLAPSTICK).

8 P-40 fighters and P-38 Lightning fighters hit Yangtze River
shipping near Chiuchiang, Kichun, Wusueh, Ocheng, and Changanyi,
and strafe targets in the general area.
Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25
Mitchell medium bombers bomb and strafe coastal area from
Alexishafen to Finschhafen and hit points on New Britain coast.
Heavy bombers attack Garove Island. Selaroe Island is hit
by light medium bombers strike.
Thirteenth Air Force. 12 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and 50 plus naval dive bombers
pound Vila airfield and barges at Disappointment Cove. 18
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, with fighters escort, bomb Kahili
airfield. 2 nearby coastal guns are also hit.
Eleventh Air Force. At Umnak, the Royal Canadian Air Force
(RCAF) 14th Fighter Squadron prepares to depart for Canada.

X-1 (Fritz X)
was used against the Italian naval fleet, after they signed
the armistice with the Allies. The Italian battleship Roma
was hit and destroyed, also her sistership a battleship, Italia
was badly damaged.
