On D-day for Operation STARKEY (rehearsal for the invasion of France), Eighth Air Force dispatches a record number of 330 heavy bombers, which attack Paris and Beaumontsur-Oise, Beauvais, Tille, Lille, Nord, Lille, Vendeville, Saint-Omer, Longuenesse, Saint-Omer, Fort Rouge, Abbeville, Drucat, and Vitry-en-Artois airfields, as well as industrial area around Paris. P-40 fighters fly uneventful sweep over Sardinia. XII A Support Command fighters maintain patrols over Salerno, and other Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) planes bomb and strafe motor transport, roads, and other targets in Catanzaro-Auletta-Rogliano area and North North West of Salerno, as General Clark's Fifth Army invades Italy, landing near Salerno (Operation AVALANCHE) and British forces make airborne landing on heel of Italy, taking Taranto (Operation SLAPSTICK).

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers hit satellite airfield at Foggia.

Tenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers again mine Rangoon River, during 8-9 September 1943.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb and strafe coastal area from Alexishafen to Finschhafen and hit points on New Britain coast. Heavy bombers attack Garove Island. Selaroe Island is hit by light medium bombers strike.

Thirteenth Air Force. 12 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and 50 plus naval dive bombers pound Vila airfield and barges at Disappointment Cove. 18 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, with fighters escort, bomb Kahili airfield. 2 nearby coastal guns are also hit.

Eleventh Air Force. At Umnak, the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) 14th Fighter Squadron prepares to depart for Canada.
