Eighth Air Force. 44th and 93d Bomber Groups resume operations
in United Kingdom after Detached Service in Africa, 389th,
previously diverted to Africa, becomes operational in United
Kingdom. Over 200 medium bombers attack coastal defences in
Boulogne-sur-Mer area and Lille, Nord and Lille, Vendeville
airfields.
Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24
Liberator heavy bombers bomb landing ground at Foggia, as
convoys approach Salerno to begin United States invasion of
Italy (Operation AVALANCHE).
Twelfth Air Force. About 130 XII Bomber Command B-17 Flying
Fortress heavy bombers bomb Frascati. More than 160 medium
bombers hit highway at Lauria and bridges at Trebisacce and
Sapri. Fighters hit Pabillonis, cover Allied forces near Pizzo,
and bomb and strafe roads and vehicles in Lamezia-Vibo Valentia-Pizzo-Catanzaro
areas. Bombers hit roads and junctions in Naples area during

Tenth Air Force. 6 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24
Liberator heavy bombers mine Rangoon River during
7-8
September 1943. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit Gokteik Viaduct
for second consecutive day, scoring 5 hits at the base of
the structure, which remains usable.
Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17
Flying Fortress heavy bombers, B-24 Liberator heavy bombers,
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and B-26 Marauder medium bombers
pound Lae area, and A-20 Havoc light bombers hit Salamaua.
Japanese at Salamaua are ordered to prepare to fall back to
Lae in face of approaching Australian 5th Division. Elements
of Australian 9th Division, moving West on Lae, reach flooded
Busu River where Japanese hold West bank. Other heavy bombers
and medium bombers carry out light raids on targets in West
part of Netherlands New Guinea and in islands of Netherlands
East Indies (NEI).

B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit Vila airfield area.
Seventh Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24
Liberator heavy bombers operating from Canton Island fire
