The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers made heavy night
raid on Nuremberg.
North Africa. In North Tunisia Field Marshal
Erwin
Rommel's Afrika Corps attack was held near Tamera, in
the south French troops occupied Tozeur.
In the Mediterranean. Allied bombers raided Palermo and Agrigento.
Russian Front. Soviet troops captured Sychevka, North of Vyasma,
after extremely stubborn fighting with Wehrmacht ground forces.
Army Air Force. Committee of Operations Analysts, composed
of military and civilian members, submits to General Arnold
a report attempting to set forth industrial objectives, the
destruction of which would weaken Germany most decisively
in the shortest time. This report, which lists German aircraft
industry as first priority, is basis for much of Combined
Bomber Offensive (Plan).
Eighth Air Force. 54 heavy bombers hit Rennes marshalling
yard while 13 strike marshalling yard at Rouen. Bomb run over
Rouen is considerably disrupted by well-executed attack of
fighters which down 2 bombers including lead aircraft. This
action is preceded by an earlier wave of Luftwaffe fighters
which occupy the fighters escort while the second wave attacks
the bombers.
Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). Northwest African Strategic
Air Force (NASAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers and B-25
Mitchell medium bombers attack shipping between Tunisia and
Sicily, claiming destruction or heavy damage of several motor
vessels. Other B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers hit shipping
and marshalling yard at Sousse. P-38 Lightning fighters escort
the bomb missions. Fighters of Northwest African Tactical
Air Force (NATAF) fly several reconnaissance and patrol missions
along Tunisian First Army (British) battlefront while Western
Desert Air Force (WDAF)P-40 fighters and Spitfires hit rear
of columns attacking Medenine from the West.
Tenth Air Force. 12 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25
Mitchell medium bombers strike at Myitnge bridge and antiaircraft
positions. Results are poor. 4 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers
bomb Bassein docks. P-40 fighters hit military targets near
Pebu and Wan-hat.
Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) heavy
bombers, operating individually, hit occupied areas in Southeast
coastal region of North West New Guinea and also strike at
Saumlakki and Babo.
Thirteenth Air Force. Airfields at Munda and Vila are again
hit by light B-24 Liberator heavy bombers raids.
