Events On This Day

North Africa. Attacks by Field Marshal Erwin Rommel's Afrika Corps tanks and infantry were repulsed by the British Eighth Army in Mareth area.

Russian Front. Gzhatsk occupied by Soviet troops.

Joseph Vissarionovich Stalin awarded military title of Marshal of the Soviet Union.

Eighth Air Force. 63 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) heavy bombers strike power plant, bridge, and port area at Lorient. 15 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers make diversionary attack on bridge and Kriegsmarine U-boat facilities at Brest.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). Weather cancels Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) bomber missions. Fighters fly reconnaissance along battle line in Tunisia.

Ninth Air Force. 35 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) planes strafe and bomb installations in the Mareth Line as Field Marshal Erwin Rommel's expected attack in Tunisia takes place and is defeated. 4 thrusts toward Medenine are repulsed by British, and enemy retreats after nightfall, having lost about 50 tanks.

Tenth Air Force. 4 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers over Burma bomb shipping near Pagoda Point, scoring near misses. On return flight, they strafe lighthouse on Alguada Reef, a lightship off China Park, and a radio station at Diamond Island. 3 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers intending to bomb Pazundaung bridge fail to reach target. 1 manages to bomb airfields at Pagoda Point. The others return to base without bombing. 6 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers unsuccessfully attack Myitnge bridge.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20 Havoc light bombers hit Guadagasal area. Single B-24 Liberator heavy bombers attack shipping off Manus and off Talasea, and hit airfields at Gasmata.

Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Kahili and Ballale Island airfields.

Eleventh Air Force. 1 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bomber flies uneventful reconnaissance mission over Kiska, Attu, Agattu, Buldir, and the Semichis.
