Events On This Day

The British Admiralty announced the loss of the submarine HMS Tigris which left Malta on 18 February 1943 to patrol South West of Naples. HMS Tigris failed to return to Algiers on 10 March 1943 and was declared overdue on that date. HMS Tigris was most likely sunk on 27 February 1943 by the Kriegsmarine submarine chaser UJ-2210 6 nautical miles Southeast of Isola di Capri, Italy.

At night Kiel received its heaviest bombing from the British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers.

Russian Front. On Donetz front Russians repelled the Wehrmacht and ground forces attacks near Lzyum. In the Kuban Soviet troops made progress.

In India. Japanese air force aircraft raided airfield near Chittagong on Bay of Bengal.

Eighth Air Force.

85 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) heavy bombers hit industrial installations in Paris area, including Renault armament works and motor works, which are severely damaged. Fierce fighters opposition accounts for 4 United States bombers.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb small shipping at Carloforte and landing ground at El Djem. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers hit Capodichino airfield and marshalling yard at Naples. P-38 Lightning fighters dive-bomb beached freighter off Cape Zebib. Other P-38 Lightning fighters escort the bombing raids. Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) A-20 Havoc light bombers hit La Fauconnerie airfield while B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit El Djem and Sainte-Marie du Zit airfields. Fighters accompany Light bombers and medium bombers on attacks, and carry out numerous patrols, reconnaissance flights, and fighters sweeps over battle areas of Tunisia.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers attack Naples, concentrating on dock area. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) Liberators, under IX Bomber Command, bomb Palermo.

Tenth Air Force. 8 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit Maymyo engine sheds. 9 others bomb Pyawbwe railroad yards. 7 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers heavily damage Thilawa oil refinery.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and A-20 Havoc light bombers pound areas along Huon Gulf, around Kitchen Creek and Heaths and Lane Plantations. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb town area, and airfield at Kavieng. Single B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb Salamaua and Cape Gloucester.

South Pacific (SOPAC). Admiral Mitscher assumes position of Commander Air Solomons (COMAIRSOLS).
