Events On This Day

North Africa. In South Tunisia the British eighth Army troops managed to repelled attacks at Ksar Ghilane with heavy loss to Field Marshal Erwin Rommel's Afrika Corps.

Russian Front. Soviet troops occupied Biely, in Smolensk region, in the Donetz basin. The Wehrmacht ground forces threat to Kharkov increased.

Eighth Air Force. A few P-47 Thunderbolt fighters take part for first time in fighters sweep from United Kingdom. Aircraft-to-aircraft communication proves impossible because of VHF radio malfunctions.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb El Aouina airfield and La Marsa landing ground, destroying several parked aeroplanes, and hit town of Gafsa. Fighters escort the B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers and carry out numerous reconnaissance missions.

Ninth Air Force. Flight echelon of 340th Bomber Group (M) begins arriving in Egypt.

Tenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) heavy bombers strike Rangoon area at 2 points. 5 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers hit Pazundaung bridge. 4 others pound runways, buildings, and revetments at Mingaladon airfield. After the attack, several fighters attack the flight. The heavy bombers claim 3 shot down. Chine Air Task Force (CATF) is absorbed by Fourteenth Air Force.

Fourteenth Air Force. Fourteenth Air Force is activated at Kunming with General Chennault as Commanding General. P-40 fighters from Kunming fly armed reconnaissance into Burma, crossing the Salween and covering areas South West of Lashio.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb airfields and shipping at Wewak. Single heavy bombers attack shipping off New Guinea.

Eleventh Air Force. Reconnaissance aeroplane is attacked by 5 aircraft. Kiska attack mission is flown by 10 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, 6 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, 12 P-38 Lightning fighters (4 of them flying top cover), and 1 F-5A reconnaissance aircraft. 8 of the P-38 Lightning fighters strafe ground installations. The B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb radar site and pound North Head, silencing antiaircraft fire. The B-24 Liberator heavy bombers hit Main Camp area. 4 Amchitka based P-40 fighters bomb submarine base.
