Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). During
30-31
March 1943, Wellingtons bomb Decimomannu airfield. During
the day, B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers hit Villacidro,
Monserrato and Decimomannu airfields and Cagliari harbour.
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit shipping off Northeast Tunisia.
The B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers and B-25 Mitchell medium
bombers missions are escorted by P-38 Lightning fighters.
Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) fighters, Light
bombers, and medium bombers attack La Fauconnerie airfield,
hit concentrations on El Guettar-Gabes road (enemy positions
through which United States II Corps is trying to break),
bomb transport in Djebel Tabouna area, attack roads in Mezzouna-Mahares-Sfax-Sousse
areas, hit trucks, half- tracks, and tanks South of Djebel
Berda and in Djebel Berrani area, bomb Djebel Chemsi Pass,
strafe trucks on Djebel Hadifa-Sidi Rouda road and in Ofel-El
Guettar area. Western Desert Air Force (WDAF )hits El Maou
landing ground.
Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25
Mitchell medium bombers bomb Sfax airfield. Bombs explode
among 6 parked aeroplanes. P-40 fighters escort bombers and
fly fighter-bomber operations, during which motor transport
along highway North of Gabes is hit.
Tenth Air Force. 9 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25
Mitchell medium bombers bomb marshalling yard at Pyinmana,
blasting railroad tracks and warehouses.
Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20
Havoc light bombers hit Salamaua, while B-24 Liberator heavy
bombers bomb Babo. Individual B-24 Liberator heavy bombers
attack Lae airfield, Finschhafen, and Samoa Point and Timper
River bridges.
Thirteenth Air Force United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
P-40 fighters and P-38 Lightning fighters hit Suavanau Point
area on Rekata Bay.
Eleventh Air Force. Reconnaissance aeroplane finds impenetrable
weather and returns to base. 2 P-38 Lightning fighters make
uneventful sweep.
