Russian Front. Extremely
hard fighting continued on northern Donetz where fresh Wehrmacht ground forces
attacks were repelled.
Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). Weather
halts all Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) missions except fighters
reconnaissance. Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) fighters bomb area
Northeast of Oued Zarga, attack tanks, trucks, and troops Southeast of Slourhia,
at Djebel ben Kheir, at Djebel Chemsi, near El Ayacha and El Avoua, along El Guettar-Mahares
road, and in El Agahea area. A-20 Havoc light bombers bomb La Fauconnerie airfield,
hit troops at Djebel Chemsi, and bomb tanks and troops at Djebel Berda which is
being assaulted by United States 9th Division.
Ninth Air Force. 3 United
States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers sent to bomb Messina
ferry slip are unable to rendezvous because of bad weather. 1 heavy bomber bombs
Crotone chemical factory, hitting centre of factory area, warehouses, and rail
facilities. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) Liberators sent against same target
return without bombing. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit landing ground at Sfax,
scoring direct hits on 4 aircraft. P-40 fighters fly escort missions. British
ground forces make contact with enemy's new line along Oued el Akarit.
Tenth Air Force. 5 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers
bomb Maymyo railroad yards, scoring hits on machine shops, sheds, and tracks.
16 P-40 fighters hit targets at Npyentawng, Wuja, and Mohnyin.
Fourteenth
Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters strafe 8 locomotives
South West of Lashio, exploding 3 of them.
Fifth Air Force. United States
Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20 Havoc light bombers, B-25 Mitchell medium bombers,
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, and B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers pound shipping,
harbour, and town area at Finschhafen. Other B-24 Liberator heavy bombers hit
Gasmata. Single aircraft attack several targets, mostly shipping and coastal areas,
in Netherlands East Indies (NEI), Northeast New Guinea, and New Britain.
Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) heavy bombers
continue snooper strikes on Vila and Kahili airfields.
Eleventh Air
Force. 6 missions are dispatched against Kiska and Attu. From Adak, 6 B-24 Liberator
heavy bombers, 6 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, and 4 P-38 Lightning fighters are
over Kiska at noon but cannot bomb due to weather. 4 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers,
4 P-38 Lightning fighters, and 2 F-5A reconnaissance aircraft then bomb runway
at Attu. Next, 5 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and 4 P-38 Lightning fighters bomb
Main Camp; intense antiaircraft fire downs 1 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers. From
Amchitka, 4 P-38 Lightning fighters bomb Little Kiska. Next, 4 P-38 Lightning
fighters bomb Kiska through overcast, followed by 6 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers
bombing and strafing radar, radio installations, Main Camp, runway, and personnel.
