Events On This Day

Sinking of five U-boats in ten days by Coastal Command aircraft announced.

Russian Front. Heavy fighting continued Northeast of Novorossisk against Wehrmacht to ground forces.

United States of America. United States Navy Department. Announced that Japanese organised resistance had ceased on Attu island.

Sharp Luftwaffe daylight raid on Southwest coast town by fighter-bombers.

General Charles de Gaulle arrived in Algiers for talks with General Henri Giraud.

It was announced that French fleet at Alexandria had joined the Allies. Vichy radio announced that the French squadron, commanded by Admiral Godefroy, which was immobilised at Alexandria since the 1940 armistice, has gone over to the French forces fighting with the Allies. Berlin radio quoted a report from Vichy stating that Laval's Government had announced that the French Fleet at, Alexandria had given in to British and American pressure and the crews had stated that they were joining the Allies. Tile Exchange Telegraph stated that it is confirmed officially that Lieut. General Godefroy's squadron has gone over to the side of the Allies and the action was taken after
negotiations with General Giraud. The statement that the garrison had been starved into submission was untrue. Routers naval correspondent stated that the French fleet could not be considered an accession to the Allied navies for the ships had been immobilised for three years, but the psychological effect would be considerable. It is believed that the machinery has been well looked after, but It will be many months before they will be of battle service.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). During 29-30 May 1943, Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) Wellingtons bomb Pantelleria. The following morning medium bombers and fighters also hit the island. P-38 Lightning fighters bomb Chilivani railway station and marshalling yard, hit port and railroad at Aranci, and strafe targets in Sardinia. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb Pomigliano aircraft factory and landing ground and Capodichino airfield and marshalling yard. Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) fighters hit Pantelleria.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers hit Foggia, airfield, damaging buildings and hangars, and destroying several aircraft. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers attack concentrations on Northeast slope of Pantelleria.

Fourteenth Air Force. 7 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb artillery positions South of Ichang. 4 P-40 fighters bomb and strafe Tengchung and targets along Burma Road and at Lamaing; 8 others on offensive sweep strafe several targets in Ichang area; 11 others hit riverboats at Shasi and trains Northeast of Yoyang.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb Wewak, Boram, and Madang. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers hit Kendari area.

Eleventh Air Force. 8 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters fly 4 reconnaissance missions to Kiska. 3 air ground support missions to Attu by 7 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and 12 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers drop no bombs there and instead bomb Kiska installations. 2 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and 12 P-38 Lightning fighters fly air cover missions over Attu and patrol area. 3 F-5A reconnaissance aircraft fly photo reconnaissance and 8 P-40 fighters attack and strafe tents and troops and blast runway at Kiska.
