Events On This Day

Daylight raid by the British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers on Cherbourg, Flushing, Zeebrugge and Caen.

Russian Front. Night attacks by Soviet Air Force on rly junctions of Briansk, Polotsk and Rezhetza.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb airfields and marshalling yard at Foggia. Medium bombers and fighters hit defended positions on Pantelleria. P-38 Lightning fighters bomb Cagliari, factory at Guspini, and power station at Santa Caterina. Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) P-40 fighters hit Pantelleria.

Ninth Air Force. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) heavy bombers, including Liberators of 178 Bomber Squadron under IX Bomber Command control, bomb oil stores, harbour and seaplane base at Augusta.

Fourteenth Air Force. 9 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, escorted by United States and Chinese P-40 fighters, bomb Ichang airfield. The heavy bombers and fighters shoot down 5 fighters of an intercepting group of about 20. 1 Chinese P-40 is lost. 6 P-40 fighters on armed reconnaissance over Siaokan area blast a train and strafe troop concentration.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers pound Lae airfield and town area.

Thirteenth Air Force. 3 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers on armed reconnaissance over South Bougainville bomb Numa area and Tinputs. Small coastal vessel at Tinputs is set afire.

Eleventh Air Force. 5 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) F-5A reconnaissance aircraft fly separate photo missions. 6 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, 10 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, 37 P-40 fighters and 8 P-38 Lightning fighters fly attack missions to Kiska. Their targets include Gertrude Cove, antiaircraft installation trenches, North Head runway, and a vessel.
