heavy bombers hit submarine pens and locks at Saint-Nazaire.
Smaller strikes are made at Rennes naval depot and Kriegsmarine
U-boat yards at La Pallice. 7 YB-40 heavily armed escort bombers,
B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers with increased firepower
for escorting bombers, fly their first mission to Saint-Nazaire.
YB-40 heavily armed escort bombers show inability to keep
up with B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers and need for modification
of waist and tail gun feeds and ammunition supplies.
Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). During
28-29
May 1943, Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) Wellingtons
bomb town areas, docks, and airfield at Castelevtrano, Bo
Rizzo, Trapani, and Marsala. During day, Northwest African
Strategic Air Force (NASAF) P-38 Lightning fighters bomb Porto
Ponte Romano. P-40 fighters, P-38 Lightning fighters, and
B-26 Marauder medium bombers of Northwest African Strategic
Air Force (NASAF) and Northwest African Tactical Air Force
(NATAF) attack gun positions, radar station, and town area
on Pantelleria.
Fourteenth Air Force. 9 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Ichang. 4 P-40 fighters
hit targets in Tengchung and Lungling areas.
Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17
Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb Madang and Alexishafen.
Heavy bombers and medium bombers, operating individually or
in flights of 2 bombers, attack town, airfields, shipping,
docks, and other targets at various places, including Dili,
Penfoei, Damar Island, Soemba, Soembawa, Babo, Nabire, Saidor,
Finschhafen, Manam Island, and Cape Gloucester.
Eleventh Air Force. No missions flown. All of Attu is secure
after 19 days of fighting. United States ground forces land
on Shemya.
