In Italy. It was disclosed that in the raid on Rome 19 July
1943, 700 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) bombers dropped
1,100 tons of bombs.
777 British Royal Air Force (RAF) Lancasters, Halifaxes, Stirlings,
Wellingtons, Mosquitos again plastered Hamburg in great night
attack, 28 bombers were lost.
Eighth Air Force. 91 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
heavy bombers bomb Kriegsmarine U-boat yards at Kiel, and
81 attack

aircraft factory at Warnemunde. Medium bombers hit Saint-Omer
and Fort Rouge airfield. Mission to Schiphol airfield aborts
due to navigational error.
Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). Northwest African Strategic
Air Force (NASAF) B-26 Marauder medium bombers hit Aquino
airfield. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb Viterbo
airfield. Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) fighters
and light bombers hit Regalbuto, Milazzo, shipping off Messina,
and gun positions and motor transport in Northeast Sicily.
United States Seventh Army almost completes mopping up of
West Sicily, approaches Santo Stefano Quisquina, advances
on Mistretta, and takes 3 islands off Trapani. British Eighth
Army opens assault during 29-

Ninth Air Force. Over 200 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
P-40 fighters, to date the largest number of fighters operating
in 1 day during Sicilian campaign, attack Messina Riposto,
shipping at Catania, Santa Teresa di Riva, Taormina, Milazzo,
and in Straits of Messina.
Tenth Air Force. 2 flights of United States Army Air Force
(USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers blast the previously
bombed Mu River bridge between Ywataung and Monywa. The bridge
is hit heavily with 1 span left submerged in the river.
Fourteenth Air Force. 18 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, with fighters escort, bomb shipping
and dockyard installations at Hong Kong. Kowloon and Taikoo
Docks and the old Royal Navy yards are hit. 4 P-40 fighters
attack Japanese force of 23 bombers and 30 fighters attacking
Hengyang. 1 Japanese fighters is downed.
Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17
Flying Fortress heavy bombers, B-24 Liberator heavy bombers,
and B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Kela Point and village,
and Salamaua town and peninsula area. B-25 Mitchell medium
bombers, B-26 Marauder medium bombers, and a B-24 Liberator
heavy bombers attack Army Headquarters, barges, and villages
in Natamo vicinity, shipping off Cape Gloucester, and barges
off Cape Dampier, in Borgen Bay, and along coast from Ring
Ring Plantation to Roebuck Point. P-40 fighters strafe targets.
