273 British Royal Air Force (RAF) Halifaxes, Stirlings, Lancasters,
Mosquitos attacked Kassel (Central German arms centre) and
Remscheid (between Ruhr and Rhine) heavily bombed, 15 bombers
lost. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) laid mines in the
Frisian Islands without loss.
Eighth Air Force. 134 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
heavy bombers bomb aircraft works and marshalling yard at
Kassel. P-47 Thunderbolt fighters with auxiliary tanks surprise
attacking Luftwaffe fighters over Bocholt as enemy is not
yet accustomed to fighters escort penetration beyond coastal
fringe. Small number of medium bombers hit airfields at Woensdrecht.
Bad weather causes multiple aborts on this mission and abandonment
of attack on Courtrai airfield.
Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). Northwest African Strategic
Air Force (NASAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb
Grottaglie airfield. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit airfields
at Pratica di Mare. Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF)
A-20 Havoc light bombers bomb Milazzo and hit gun positions
North and East of Centuripe. Fighters hit shipping off Milazzo.
Enemy evacuates Santo Stefano Quisquina, with rear Fuard action.
British take Catenanuova and push on to Northeast.
Ninth Air Force. Over 100 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
P-40 fighters attack shipping at Milazzo, Messina, and Riposto,
and hit targets in battle area.
Fourteenth Air Force. 15 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
P-40 fighters over Hengyang area make contact with 39 Japanese
fighters and 24 bombers. In the ensuing battle, 3 bombers
and 2 fighters are downed, 2 P-40 fighters are lost.
Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24
Liberator heavy bombers bomb Salamaua and Kela. B-25 Mitchell
medium bombers hit barges off Huon Peninsula and villages
in Finschhafen area. A-20 Havoc light bombers destroy several
barges at Hanisch Harbour and Langemak Bay. Single B-24 Liberator
heavy bombers bomb Cape Gloucester and Unea Island.
Thirteenth Air Force. 9 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, with escort of 16 P-38 Lightning
fighters and P-40 fighters and 40 plus Navy F4U Corsair fighter,
pound Ballale Island Air force.
