raid carried out on Duesseldorf.
Russian Front. Advancing from Tuapse, Soviet troops captured
Apsheron on way to Maikop.
In Australasia. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) aircraft
bombed Kolombangara, New Georgia.
It was announced that .Mr. Roosevelt and Mr. Churchill had
been in conference at Casablanca since

January 1943 General Charles de Gaulle and General Henri
Giraud were also present.
Eighth Air Force. 53 heavy bombers make first Eighth Air Force
attack on Germany, bombing naval base, U-boat construction
works, power plant, and docks at Wilhelmshaven. 2 other heavy
bombers bomb submarine base at Emden.
Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25
Mitchell medium bombers hit shipping off North coast of Algeria,
attacking 2 destroyers and leaving 1 on fire. B-26 Marauder
medium bombers on shipping strike fail to attack sighted vessels
because of weather. A-20 Havoc light bombers attack town of
Al Mazzunah. Fighters escort bombers and fly reconnaissance
and local patrols.
Ninth Air Force. During
26-27
January 1943, B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Naples and
Messina. In afternoon, other B-24 Liberator heavy bombers
hit Palermo, after weather causes diversion from primary target
at Naples. British Eighth Army's 7th Armoured Division meets
stiffening resistance near Zuwarah.
Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20
Havoc light bombers hit huts and antiaircraft positions at
Garrison Hill while B-25 Mitchell medium bombers pound supply
storage and runway at Malahang. Individual B-24 Liberator
heavy bombers bomb Finschhafen town, runway on tip of Huon
Peninsula, and Gasmata airfield.
Thirteenth Air Force. General Twining and a crew of 14 are
down at sea between Guadalcanal and Espiritu Santo. The entire
group is rescued 6 days later. General Twining's rubber raft
had no radio, an item which Commanding General of United States
Army Forces in the South Pacific (COMGENSOPAC), General Millard
Harmon, had been requesting for some time. This incident results
in the rapid appearance of dinghy radio sets in the area.
6 B-26 Marauder medium bombers and 8 P-39 fighters attack
airfields at Munda.
Eleventh Air Force. Negative weather reconnaissance sortie
over Kiska. 4 P-38 Lightning fighters fly protective patrol
over Amchitka. Upon their departure, 3 Japanese aircraft appear
and unsuccessfully bomb shipping but cause 3 casualties.
