Events On This Day

Heavy night raid on U-boat base at Lorient carried out by the British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers.

Russian Front. Soviet troops continued to advance in Caucasus and on Lower Don areas against the Wehrmacht and ground forces.

In Burma. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers raided Akyab area by day and night.

In Australasia. Allied troops broke through Japanese positions at Sanananda in Papua.

Casablanca Conference opens. Mr. Churchill, Roosevelt, and Combined Chiefs of Staff discuss offensive in the Mediterranean and pledge to accept only unconditional surrender.

Eighth Air Force. One Squadron of 4th Fighter Group becomes the first in Eighth Air Force to be completely equipped with P-47 Thunderbolt fighters.

Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers, with fighters escort, attack docks and shipping at Sousse and Sfax. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, with P-38 Lightning fighters, fly anti-shipping sweep in Straits of Sicily; no ships are sighted but vehicles and troop concentrations are strafed by fighters on return trip. B-26 Marauder medium bombers, with fighters escort, attack rail junction at Kalaa Srira and junction and warehouse at Mahares. Fighters fly reconnaissance, patrols, and C-47 Skytrain transport aircraft escort.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers strike motor transport near Gheiada, with P-40 fighters providing cover. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers fail, because of weather, to locate Sousse harbour (primary target), but several bomb in target area and along road near Teboulba. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) Liberators, under IX Bomber Command, hit Tripoli, Tagiura, and supply dump at Misurata.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20 Havoc light bombers strafe Labu area and small boats in Sachsen Bay. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb fuel dump and other sup plies along beach in vicinity of Voco Point near Lae. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers carry out single-plane attacks on Madang and Finschhafen, and also bomb Gasmata.

Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-39 fighters, dropping improvised gasoline bombs in Guadalcanal battle area around Mount Austen and Kokumbona pound forces and supplies throughout the day. Others hit barges and launches at Kaimana Bay and Aruligo Point.
