Eighth Air Force. Bombing by P-47 Thunderbolt fighters is
inaugurated by VIII Fighter Command in attack on Saint-Omer
airfield by 56th and 353d Fighter Groups. Two other fighters
groups, the 55th (P-38 Lightning fighters) and 352d (P-47
Thunderbolt fighters), carry out offensive sweeps in Lille
area. The fighters, including 2 escorting groups, fly over
330 offensive sorties. 401st Bomber Group reaches operational
status, making 22 heavy bomber groups now operational in Eighth
Air Force.
Allied Expeditionary Air Force (AEAF) Air Chief Marshal Sir
Leigh-Mallory activates his Headquarters. Second Tactical
Air Force, The British Royal Air Force (RAF), and on

December 1943 United States Ninth Air Force (operationally)
are included under Allied Expeditionary Air Force (AEAF).
Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) light
bombers and medium bombers of XII A Support Command, along
with Allied air planes, bomb gun positions and defended points
in Lanciano Fossacesic area. Medium bombers also hit Sarajevo,
Travnik and Ancona. United States and The British Royal Air
Force (RAF) fighters at tack vehicles, gun positions, and
strong points in Casoli, Castelfrentano, Lanciano, Fossacesia
area.
Fifteenth Air Force. Bad weather causes recall of heavy bombers.
P-38 Lightning fighters on supply and air sea rescue escort
duty also abort due to rain storms.
Tenth Air Force. In a raid on Rangoon, B-24 Liberator heavy
bombers of the 308th Bomber Group, borrowed from Fourteenth
Air Force, are unable to bomb because of bad weather but B-25
Mitchell medium bombers, covered by P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers,
manage to hit Mingaladon airfield, damaging the field and
claiming 2 aeroplanes destroyed. Japanese fighters intercept
and in the ensuing battle the B-25 Mitchell medium bombers
and P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers claim 2 shot down. 2 P-51
Mustang fighter-bombers are lost.
Fourteenth Air Force. 14 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and 16 P-38 Lightning fighters
and P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers attack airfields at Shinchiku,
hitting a parking area, hangars, barracks, and other buildings.
32 enemy aircraft are claimed destroyed in the air and on
the ground. 16 P-40 fighters on armed reconnaissance over
Hanshow, Changte area sink 2 60 ft boats and 15 sampans and
strafe many small supply and troop carrying boats.
Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-39
fighters strafe Bogadjim Road. Sattelberg falls to Australian
9th Division.
