Events On This Day

Eighth Air Force. 440 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) heavy bombers attack port area of Bremen. 128 heavy bombers assigned industrial targets in Paris area abort mission on arrival over target because of complete cloud cover which totally obscures objective. 29 aircraft are lost.

Ninth Air Force. Almost 140 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) medium bombers attack Cambrai, Epinoy and Roye, Amy airfields and military constructions in town of Audinghen.

Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and A-20 Havoc light bombers along with The British Royal Air Force (RAF) light bombers, attack marshalling yard and harbour at Ancona, defended positions near Fossacesia, Lanciano, and Castelfrentano. United States and The British Royal Air Force (RAF) fighter-bombers hit these same positions and also attack troop concentrations near Palombaro and North of Casoli.

Fifteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers of 2d and 99th Bomber Groups hit viaduct at Recco. 301st Bomber Group B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb Rimini marshalling yard and bridge. 17th Bomber Group B-26 Marauder medium bombers bomb Cassino while B-24 Liberator heavy bombers of 376th Bomber Group attack bridges in Fano, Cesano, Senigallia, and Falconara areas, scoring hits or near misses at Fano, Falconara and Senigallia.

Fourteenth Air Force. 5 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and 16 fighters attack Kiangling airfield. 2 other B-26 Marauder medium bombers damage freighter in Honghai Bay. 12 P-40 fighters attack numerous boats in Changte, Tehshan area. 8 other P-40 fighters hit railroad yards at Cam Duong.

Fifth Air Force. Almost 40 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) medium bombers hit barge hideouts near Sio. P-40 fighters and P-47 Thunderbolt fighters strafe villages and targets around Alexishafen, Madang, and Nubia. P-39 fighters attack force of about 40 Japanese fighters and bombers in Finschhafen area, claiming 4 shot down. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Gasmata and score hits on cruiser near Ubili.

Thirteenth Air Force. Buka and Bonis airfields are hit by more than 40 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, 30 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, and more than 30 fighters aircraft. A few B-34 Lexington bomber attack Green Island, causing heavy damage in bivouac and supply area and sinking a barge. A single B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bombs Ballale Island airfield.
