Events On This Day

President Roosevelt, Mr Churchhill and Chiang Kai-shek confer in Cairo. Talks last until 26 November 1943 and concern OVERLORD, possibility of expanding operations in Mediterranean Theatre of Operations (MTO), and future operations against Japan. It is decided to make amphibious landing and offensive in Burma (CHAMPION) and to base B-29 Superfortress heavy bomber's in China-Burma-India (CBI) (TWILIGHT).

Twelfth Air Force. Over 100 XII A Support Command P-40 fighters, B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, and The British Royal Air Force (RAF) Baltimores, attack strong points in Lanciano, Fossacesia area, concentrating on gun positions. P-40 fighters also hit roads and railways at Fabriano, towns of Viticuso and Vallerotonda, and as far North as Urbino. A-36 Apache dive bomber hit chemical works, harbour, and railroad yards at Civitavecchia and bomb village of San Vittore del Lazio.

Fifteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-26 Marauder medium bombers, escorted by P-38 Lightning fighters, hit railroad centre at Foligno, scoring numerous hits, others attack bridge at Ciciana.

Fourteenth Air Force. 12 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters strafe river traffic from Hofuh to Changte, and 16 attack numerous small troop boats on Tungting Lake, West of Changteh.

Fifth Air Force. 22 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and A-20 Havoc light bombers attack villages around Sattelberg. More than 100 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Gasmata and Cape Gloucester. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers on armed reconnaissance score hits on freighter near Kavieng and tanker and barge in Bismarck Sea.

Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters in battle with 30-40 fighters over Empress Augusta Bay claim 5 fighters shot down. P-38 Lightning fighters strafe barges and shore targets at Chabai. 20 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, along with 5 B-34 Lexington bomber, 8 P-38 Lightning fighters and 8 Navy F4U Corsair fighter, attack Buka airfield scoring hits on the airstrip and taxiways.

Seventh Air Force. 11 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers from Canton Island bomb Mille. Heavy bombers claim 2 interceptors shot down.
