Events On This Day

Ninth Air Force. 83 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-26 Marauder medium bombers bomb Beroksur Mer and Saint-Omer, Longuenesse airfields.

Twelfth Air Force. Weather limits operations to fighters patrols of battle area.

Fourteenth Air Force. 13 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, 24 P-40 fighters, and 7 P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers pound Yoyang railroad yards and warehouse area. 8 other P-40 fighters, on armed reconnaissance over Hanshow area, strafe barges, boats, supplies, and cavalry forces.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and A-20 Havoc light bombers hit villages around Finschhafen. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers attack convoy near Halmahera Island and sink 1 vessel.

South Pacific (SOPAC). General Hubert Harmon assumes duties as Deputy Commander for Air in South Pacific (SOPAC).

Thirteenth Air Force. Colonel Earl W Barnes assumes command of XIII Fighter Command. Chabai is attacked by 23 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, 6 B-34 Lexington bomber, and 24 Navy F4U Corsair fighter. 2 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb the same targets later in the day. 19 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers hit Bonis and Buka airfields. 4 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers on shipping sweep, bomb and strafe villages along Bougainville coast between Mabiri and Luluai.

Seventh Air Force. 6 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers from Nukufetau bomb Emidj and Jabor on Jaluit Atoll.
