Events On This Day

In Sicily. Palermo taken by Americans forces. Places taken included Sciacca, San Stefano and Rammacca.

Russian Front. Soviet forces advance 4 to 5 miles in Orel direction. Bolkhov captured from the Wehrmacht ground forces.

Eighth Air Force. Results of first phase of Combined Bomber Offensive (Plan) are good according to a report of Joint Intelligence Committee (British). The report maintains Combined Bomber Offensive (Plan) has caused Germany to adopt a defensive air strategy resulting in more than half its fighters strength being employed on Western Front at expense of Eastern and Mediterranean Fronts as well as causing considerable damage to transportation, synthetic rubber industry, and the fuel, iron, and coal industries of the Ruhr.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). During 21-22 July 1943, Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) Wellingtons bomb Capodichino airfield and Salerno marshalling yard. Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) light bombers hit Randazzo, railroad at Falcone, and road West of Marina. During day, over 100 B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb Battipaglia marshalling yard and Foggia. B-26 Marauder medium bombers hit Salerno bridge and marshalling yard. Fighters fly sweep over Maddalena Island, strafing factories, trucks, and small vessels. Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) light bombers bomb Adrano, Paterno, Troina, and Misterbianco. United States Seventh Army troops take Palermo. 1st Infantry Division continues North, taking Bompietro.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters escort C-47 Skytrain transport aircraft to Ponte Olivo.

Fifth Air Force. More than 50 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, and B-26 Marauder medium bombers blast troops, antiaircraft guns, defensive positions, and targets in battle zones at Komiatum, on Komiatum Ridge, at Kela, at Salamaua, and along trails near Komiatum and Salamaua. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb oil refinery, docks, and railroad yards at Soerabaja. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit targets on Selaroe.

Thirteenth Air Force. More than 20 B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers and B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, 40 Navy dive bombers, and more than 100 Allied fighters aircraft attack shipping in area off Buin. A seaplane carrier is sunk, and damaging hits are claimed on several other vessels.

Eleventh Air Force. 26 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, 17 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, 13 P-40 fighters, and 20 P-38 Lightning fighters hit North Head, Main Camp, and the submarine base at Kiska, as well as coastal defences and antiaircraft guns at both Kiska and Little Kiska, starting numerous fires. Intense and heavy antiaircraft fire downs one B-25 Mitchell medium bombers (crew saved) and damages 18 aircraft of which another B-25 Mitchell medium bombers crashes at base. 1 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers photographs South and West Kiska shores. 1 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers flies radar reconnaissance over Kiska.
