Events On This Day

In Sicily. Castelvetrano captured by Americans forces.

Russian Front. Soviet troops advanced 4 to 9 miles in Orel sector against Wehrmacht ground forces.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). During 20-21 July 1943, Wellingtons of Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) hit Crotone airfield and Naples marshalling yard; Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) light bombers hit motor transport convoys in Randazzo area. During day, Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb airfields at Grosseto. Rangers seize Castelvetrano and airport. 82d Airborne Division takes San Margherita and 3d Infantry Division takes Corleone. 45th Infantry Division, pushing North West, takes Valledolmo. 1st Infantry Division clears Alimena. In British 30 Corps area, Canadian 1st Infantry Division takes Leonforte.

Ninth Air Force. Approximately 20 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Randazzo. P-40 fighters escort C-47 Skytrain transport aircraft to Licata and return.

Fifth Air Force. More than 50 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers again thoroughly pound Madang area. Other B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit junction of Gori and Ioworo Rivers and village of Bogadjim. B-26 Marauder medium bombers bomb barges and jetties West of Voco Point. Single B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Finschhafen airfield and town of Rabaul.

Thirteenth Air Force. In a series of sorties in support of ground forces, 22 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, more than 50 Army Air Force and Navy fighters, and more than 170 Navy dive bombers blast positions in Bairoko area. 135 tons of bombs are dropped.

Eleventh Air Force. 9 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Kiska targets, including runway, North Head, and Main Camp area where fires are observed. Poor weather cancels other scheduled missions.

Ruhrstahl X-1 (Fritz X)
was first used operationally by III./KG 100 flying Do 217 in a raid on Augusta harbour in Sicily.
