Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). During
19-20
July 1943, Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) Wellingtons
bomb Aquino and Capodichino airfields while Northwest African
Tactical Air Force (NATAF) medium bombers and light bombers
attack vehicles, roads, and town areas around and in Randazzo,
Santo Stefano di Camastra, Orlando, and Nicosia in Sicily.
During day, Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF)
fighter-bombers attack targets in West Sicily while Northwest
African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) medium bombers strike
Montecorvino airfield. United States Seventh Army and British
Eighth Army continue to push North West and North 82d Airborne
Division, United States takes Sciacca and Menfi. 3d Division,
United States clears Santo Stefano Quisquina and heights North
of Mussomeli. 2d Armoured Division, with British units, takes
Enna and drives on to Villapriolo. Canadian 1st Infantry Division
pushes to Leonforte area. British 51st Division attacks Luftwaffe
airfield near Sferro. 13 Corps is halted by strong opposition
on Catania Plain.
Ninth Air Force United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25
Mitchell medium bombers attack Randazzo and Taormina. The
British Royal Air Force (RAF) heavy bombers hit Vibo Valentia
airfield.
Tenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) heavy
bombers attack Mandalay.
Fourteenth Air Force. 4 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
P-40 fighters bomb warehouse area at Tengchung. 6 others strafe
river traffic and railroad targets at Sinti, Changanyi, Tingszekiao,
Kaiyu, and near Puchi.
Fifth Air Force. As United States ground forces begin struggle
for heights commanding Tambu Bay and Dot Inlet, A-20 Havoc
light bombers and B-25 Mitchell medium bombers pound Madang
airfield and area, Komiatum, Logui, areas along Gum River
and South of Gogol River, Gori River bridge area, and Bogadjim.
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Lautem, Dili, and Cape Chater
airfield. A single B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bombs Arawe.
Thirteenth Air Force. 18 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb airfields at Kahili and
on Ballale Island. Fighters strafe barges in Pakoi Bay.
