Events On This Day

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) Wellingtons laid mines off Lorient and St Nazaire without loss.

In Sicily. It was announced that Caltanisetta had been captured by Americans and Piazza Armerina by Canadians. The British 8th Army reached Gerbini area and point 3 miles from Catania. 35,000 prisoners taken to date.

Russian Front. Soviet troops advanced in Orel sector against the Wehrmacht ground forces are fighting was extremely bitter.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). During 18-19 July 1943, Wellingtons drop over 800,000 leaflets on Rome. Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) light bombers attack Catania. During the following day, about 150 Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb Rome railroad yards, B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and B-26 Marauder medium bombers hit nearby Ciampino airfield. P-40 fighters bomb rail facilities in Alcamo area. Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) A-36 Apache dive bomber attack trains and motor transport in West Sicily. United States Seventh Army continues to push North and North West while British Eighth Army's 13 Corps still faces firm resistance near Catania.

Ninth Air Force. Over 100 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers attack Littoria marshalling yards and nearby airfield. On return flight railroads at Orlando and Anzio are bombed. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit Catania and Randazzo. P-40 fighters escort DC-3's.

Tenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers damage approaches to Shweli road bridge.

Fourteenth Air Force. 4 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers attack cement works at Haiphong.

Fifth Air Force. A United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bombs bridge over mouth of Francisco River. A B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers hits Finschhafen airfield. Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Bostons attack gun position at Komiatum and military camp at Erskine Creek.

Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb Kahili airfield. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers and B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit Ballale Island airfield. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers in support of ground forces hit positions at Bairoko battle area where enemy resistance is fierce.
