Events On This Day

Attacks on Naples, Sicily and Sardinia. At night Allied destroyers routed enemy convoy off Cape Spartivento, South Italy.

Russian Front. Soviet air force aircraft made night raids on Smolensk and on Karachev, on Briansk-Orel railway.

British air liner shot down while flying from Lisbon to Ireland.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). An attack by Wellingtons against Pantelleria during 30 May 1943 and 1 June 1943 is followed by Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) P-38 Lightning fighters and B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers while Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) P-40 fighters attack gun positions on the island during the day. Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) P-40 fighters strafe seaplane base on Stagnone Island. P-38 Lightning fighters bomb railroad near Balestrate. P-38 Lightning fighters, B-26 Marauder medium bombers, and B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, bomb Porto Torres harbour, Porto Ponte Romano, and Olbia harbour.

Fourteenth Air Force. 20 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters dive-bomb warehouses and railroad yards at Changanyi.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit Bogadjim and vicinity. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Lae airfield and nearby area.

Eleventh Air Force. 2 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters, 1 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and 1 F-5A reconnaissance aircraft fly weather reconnaissance and photo runs and 8 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, 18 P-38 Lightning fighters and 20 P-40 fighters, fly 7 attack missions to Kiska. Targets include parked aircraft and installations, runway, gun positions, radar, and tents on South Head, North Head, Gertrude Cove and Main camp.
