Events On This Day

Russian Front. Out of a force of 500 Luftwaffe aircraft raiding Kursk, 162 were shot down for loss of 27 Soviet air force planes.

In China. It was announced that, as result of Chinese victory on the Yangtse, threatened Japanese drive on Chungking was averted.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). During 1-2 June 1943, Wellingtons of Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) hit Pantelleria and drop pamphlets on Naples. Fighters and medium bombers hit the island during following morning and afternoon. P-38 Lightning fighters attack Milo airfield while P-40 fighters strafe targets in Sardinia.

Fourteenth Air Force. 5 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, escorted by 10 P-40 fighters, bomb Pailochi airfield. 18 P-40 fighters strafe troop barges and launches at Itu and 6 long columns of troops East of Changyang.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers and B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb airfields at Wewak, Boram, Dagua, and Rut. Isolated shipping strikes result in little damage to vessels and barges.

Thirteenth Air Force. 2 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers on armed reconnaissance attack gun positions, cargo boats, and shipping at Numa Numa and Tinputs.
