bombers hit Lille, Nord airfield. Other medium bombers attacks
on Lille and Merville are recalled due to bad weather.
Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) fighter-bombers
of XII A Support Command and planes of other Northwest African
Tactical Air Force (NATAF) elements (United States and The
British Royal Air Force (RAF)) concentrate on attacking roads
and vehicles in Benevento, Montesarchio, Contursi, Potenza,
Avellino areas, and hit railway station at Castelnuovo. Fifth
Army gains firm control of Salerno plain, while British Eighth
Army troops take Potenza and Auletta.
Tenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) heavy
bombers hit Monywa.
Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25
Mitchell medium bombers and B-26 Marauder medium bombers pound
Finschhafen in preparation for Allied landings on

September 1943. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers and
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb airfields and surrounding
area at Cape Gloucester. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers fly small strikes against Amboina,
Selaroe, and Penfoei.
Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and Navy dive bombers, covered
by fighters, bomb Vila airfield and a causeway, enemy positions,
and ammunition dump at Disappointment Cove. Other B-25 Mitchell
medium bombers bomb and strafe barge centres at Ringa and
Webster Coves.
Seventh Air Force. 20 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, out of Funafuti and Canton Island,
bomb Tarawa and Abemama and obtain photo coverage of Betio.
1 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers is lost to interceptors.
Eleventh Air Force. The 21st Bomber Squadron (H) departs for
the Zone of Interior.
