Events On This Day

Twelfth Air Force. XII Bomber Command B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers and B-26 Marauder medium bombers bomb Castelnuovo road junction, town of Formia, Torre Annunziata area roads, and roads and railroad South West of Sarno. XII A Support Command A-36 Apache dive bomber attack and disperse enemy tank and troop concentrations forming near Nocera for a counterattack. Other United States and The British Royal Air Force (RAF) aircraft of Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) hit enemy movement Avellino, Naples, Potenza, Benevento, Calabritto, Pomigliano, Pescopagano areas. United States Seventh Army starts into mountains North of Salerno.

Ninth Air Force. 98th and 376th Bomber Groups, along with 43d Service Group and several Military Police and engineer units, are to be transferred to Twelfth Air Force, effective on their arrival in Tunis. IX Bomber Command makes its last raid on Italy. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers of 98th and 376th Bomber Groups are dispatched against Castelfranco Veneto marshalling yard. Clouds obscure target, but 98th Group drops bombs on estimated time of arrival. 376th bombs marshalling yard and airfield at Pescara during return trip.

Tenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Sagaing and Naba.

Fourteenth Air Force. 27 Japanese bombers and 20 fighters attack airfields at Kunming. 24 P-40 fighters and 3 P-38 Lightning fighters intercept, claiming 17 aeroplanes shot down. 1 United States fighters is lost. Damage to the airfield is negligible.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers hit roads from Kaiapit to Madang, destroying 3 key bridges. P-39 fighters strafe and dive-bomb Bogadjim-Yaula area. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Wewak and Boram airfields. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit Penfoei.

Thirteenth Air Force. 1st Lieutenant Henry Meigs II (6th Night Fighter Squadron), flying a P-38 Lightning fighters against Japanese night attackers over Bougainville, shoots down 2 aircraft within 60 seconds.
