Events On This Day

Eighth Air Force. 70 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-26 Marauder medium bombers bomb Evreux, Fauville airfields. Medium bombers mission to attack Beauvais, Tille airfields aborts due to bad weather. 4 groups of P-47 Thunderbolt fighters sweep over Northeast France and Belgium and 3 groups sweep over North Belgium and Dutch Islands. A few B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers fly night attack on Hannover with The British Royal Air Force (RAF).

Twelfth Air Force. XII Bomber Command B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and B-26 Marauder medium bombers bomb roads, railroad, and bridges at or near San Martino Sannita, Grottaminarda, Amorosi, and Mignano. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers on Detached Service to Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) attack small vessels near Elba with 75mm cannon. Northwest African Tactical Bomber Force (NATBF) and XII A Support Command aeroplanes hit troop concentrations and gun positions near Serino and Santa Lucia di Serino, road block at Nocera, town and roads at Fisciano, town of Pagani, tanks and trucks between Acerno and Montella and in Foggia area, vessels and docks at Manfredonia, town of Camarella, and landing ground at Capua.

Ninth Air Force. Ninth Air Force flies its final mission from Africa. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Maritsa and Eleusis airfields. The bomb groups of IX Bomber Command subsequently are transferred to Twelfth Air Force.

Tenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) medium bombers attack Ye-u branch line railroad bridge over Mu River between Ywataung and Monywa. Negligible damage is done to the target.

Fifth Air Force. After preparatory naval bombardment, elements of Australian 9th Division land at mouth of Song River North of Finschhafen and push to South. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers pound defences in Finschhafen area. Almost 90 Fifth Air Force fighters battle aircraft attacking the convoy. 38 enemy aircraft are claimed shot down. A-20 Havoc light bombers and B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit Lae area. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Gasmata airfield. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers hit Amboina.
