Events On This Day

Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Kalamaki airfield. Fighters hit trucks North of Ancona at Macerata.

Fifteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers hit Eleusis airfield, destroying several parked aeroplanes and scoring many hits on hangars, other buildings, and runways. P-38 Lightning fighters escort the B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers as well as Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers attacking Kalamaki airfield.

Fourteenth Air Force. 8 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters strafe airfields and barracks at Kengtung, 4 others hit construction equipment at Dong Cuong airfield and 8 attack Pingkai and targets between Pingkai and Tahsai on the Salween River.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Soerabaja, Tjepoe, and Denpasar during 17-18 November 1943, and B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb freighter off Tanimbar Island. During the day, 58 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers are dispatched to support attack by Australian 9th Division on Sattelberg, but because of bad weather only 3 heavy bombers (along with 12 Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) aircraft) get through to the target. P-47 Thunderbolt fighters strafe Japanese shipping between Saidor and Finschhafen.

Thirteenth Air Force. 30 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit Buka airfield and surrounding areas during 16-17 November 1943 and 2 squadrons of B-24 Liberator heavy bombers follow with daylight strike on same target. 8 other B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Buka and Bonis at various times during 16-17 November 1943. During the afternoon 3 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit Kieta.

Seventh Air Force. More than 20 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers from Funafuti and Canton Islands bomb Mille, Maloelap, and Tarawa.
