Events On This Day

In Sicily. Augusta captured by a British and a Greek destroyer. Ragusa and Naro occupied. It was announced fall of Comiso and Ponte Olivo to Americans. Modica to the Canadians, Priolo to British. Capture announced of General Davet, commander of Italian 206th Division, together with his Headquarters 12,000 prisoners taken to date. It was disclosed that French troops were operating with Allies.

Eighth Air Force. 101 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) heavy bombers attack aircraft works at Villacoublay. Le Bourget and Amiens airfields are also hit by sizeable forces.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). During 13-14 July 1943, Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) Wellingtons bomb Palermo and Messina, and C-47 Skytrain transport aircraft drop paratroops in advance of Allied troops to secure bridge at Primosole. Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) aircraft hit ammunition dumps, trains, rail junctions, bridges, vehicle convoys, and other targets in the Sicilian countryside, and bomb several town areas including Enna and Palermo during several raids throughout 13-14 July 1943, and the following day. During the day, B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers, B-26 Marauder medium bombers, and B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, and fighters hit Naples, Messina, Enna, Marsala, and Randazzo, and numerous targets throughout Sicily. Northwest African Coastal Air Force (NACAF) continues sea patrols, reconnaissance, and convoy protection. British forces attempting to establish bridgehead at Primosole bridge on Simeto River near Lentini continue to face strong opposition.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and The British Royal Air Force (RAF) heavy bombers hit railroad, marshalling yard, harbour, and oil storage at Messina. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit Enna and Palermo areas. P-40 fighters patrol Licata and attack Lentini area.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20 Havoc light bombers bomb and strafe Orodubi area. A single B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers hits Lae. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Koepang.

Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and P-40 fighters strike small craft in Huna Cove and Beagle Channel off New Georgia. 2 barges and a small vessel are claimed destroyed. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers pound airfields at Ballale and Buka Islands and at Kahili.
