Poix and Abbeville airfields (France) attacked by the British
Royal Air Force (RAF). The British Royal Air Force (RAF) Halifaxes
bombers attacked Peugeot vehicle works at Montbéliard
(France). The British Royal Air Force (RAF) Lancasters bombers
attacked North Italian electrical transformer stations.
In Sicily. It was announced that Melilli, Biscari airfield,
Vizzini, and commander and staff of 54th Naples Division,
had been captured.
Russian Front. North of Orel, Soviet troops advanced 28 miles
on 25 miles front; and East of Orel, 12-15 miles, on 20 mile
front, five Wehrmacht divisions routed and strong Wehrmacht
defences pierced. It was claimed 12,000 Wehrmacht troops had
been killed and 2,000 taken prisoner, 104 Panzer tanks and
294 Luftwaffe aircraft destroyed in course of the offensive
to date. The Wehrmacht ground forces assaults in Bielgorod
area continued without success. In Orel-Kursk area Wehrmacht
ground forces went over to defensive.
In Australasia. It was announced that Mubo (New Guinea) was
encircled, and Greenhill, important point in Mubo defence
system was captured. 45 Japanese air force aircraft destroyed
over Rendova Island.
Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). During
14-15
July 1943, Wellingtons of Northwest African Strategic Air
Force (NASAF) hit airfields and docks at Naples while Northwest
African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) light bombers and medium
bombers bomb Palermo and fly armed reconnaissance, attacking
roads and convoys, over extensive areas of Sicily. During
the day, Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) medium
bombers bomb Vibo Valentia, while heavy bombers hit Villa
San Giovanni. Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF)
fighters fly numerous strafing and bombing missions against
trains, road junctions, radar installations, truck convoys,
railway stations, and targets throughout Sicily. Northwest
African Coastal Air Force (NACAF) aeroplanes fly sea patrols,
reconnaissance, convoy escort, and hit shipping off West coast
of Corsica and East coast of Saldinia.
Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24
Liberator heavy bombers strike main airfield and 2 satellite
fields at Foggia. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Palermo,
Cape Gallo, Salina Island, and Cape Zafferano. P-40 fighters
patrol over Licata area.
Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20
Havoc light bombers hit positions along Orodubi-Komiatum Track.
Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, P-40 fighters, and P-38 Lightning
fighters strafe 2 barges Northeast of Ganongga, leaving them
sinking. A large enemy force, estimated at 27 bombers and
40-50 Zeros, is intercepted over Vella Lavella by Army Air
Force and other Allied fighters, which claim 15 bombers and
30 Zeros destroyed, against 3 losses.
Eleventh Air Force. 1 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and 2 P-39 fighters fly reconnaissance
over Kiska and Segula Island. 9 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers
and 14 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Kiska targets including
antiaircraft batteries at North Head, Jeff Cove and Gertrude
Cove. Fires are started. 1 bomber turns back with 3 engines
and jettisons bombs, another crashes on return. Antiaircraft
fire damages a B-25 Mitchell medium bombers.
