Brolo announced capture of Riposto, Giarre, and Milo by 8th
Army Floresta and Piraino by United States. United States
warships bombarded Milazzo.
In the Mediterranean. Rome bombed in daylight by United States
B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers led by Major General J.
H. Doolittle 400-500 tons of bombs dropped.
Russian Front. Russians announced opening of new offensive
drive against Smoiensk in which Spasdemensk fell. in Briansk
sector Navlya occupied.
In Australasia. Balikpapan (Borneo) was raided by Liberators
in 2,500 mile round trip. Heaviest raid to date on Salamaua
(New Guinea)
Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). Northwest African Strategic
Air Force (NASAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb
Lorenzi marshalling yard, and B-25 Mitchell medium bombers
and B-26 Marauder medium bombers hit Littoria marshalling
yard. Other B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit vessel off Pizzo.
P-40 fighters fly sweep over South Sardinia, strafing small
boats, power station, and railroad junction Northwest African
Tactical Air Force (NATAF) light bombers and medium bombers
bomb Piedimonte, Falcone, and bridges North of Scaletta. A-36
Apache dive bomber and fighters hit targets in Northeast Sicily,
Straits of Messina and on toe of Italy, including Gioia Tauro,
Barcellona, road junction East of Randazzo, marshalling yard
and trucks at Spadafora, trucks between Taormina and Baracca,
and barges, ferries, and small vessels in the Strait of Messina.
United States Seventh Army enters Randazzo with out opposition.
Coastal forces continue East toward Patti.
Ninth Air Force. 61 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24
Liberator heavy bombers hit aircraft factory at Wiener-Neustadt
in first Ninth Air Force raid on Austria. Over 80 B-25 Mitchell
medium bombers hit Piedimonte, Falcone, and shipping at Messina.
More than 200 P-40 fighters attack shipping and bridges along
South West Italian coast, hit shipping in Straits of Messina,
and fly armed reconnaissance and fighter-bomber operations
in Northeast Sicily.
Fourteenth Air Force. 4 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
P-40 fighters bomb and strafe enemy installations at Lungling.
Fifth Air Force. 59 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24
Liberator heavy bombers, B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers,
and B-26 Marauder medium bombers drop 175 tons of bombs in
Salamaua area in the heaviest single day strike by Fifth Air
Force to date. 9 other B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb oil
centre at Balikpapan during late night raid; the round trip
covers 1,200 mile.
Thirteenth Air Force. 4 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
P-40 fighters become the first Allied aircraft to land on
the reconstructed Munda airfield, after refuelling, they are
sent on a sweep of the Kolombangara coast. 9 B-17 Flying Fortress
heavy bombers, with fighters cover, bomb Kape Harbour depot,
2 others on armed reconnaissance bomb Vila. 12 B-25 Mitchell
medium bombers bomb supply areas in Rekata Bay area. 2 B-24
Liberator heavy bombers on armed reconnaissance hit Suavanau
Point, 8 bomb Ballale Island airfield, and 13 bomb Kahili
airfield.
Eleventh Air Force. 7 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-26 Marauder medium bombers from Adak bomb targets at Main
Camp and North Head at Kiska and Little Kiska. A B-24 Liberator
heavy bombers flies a special reconnaissance mission. From
Amchitka B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, B-25 Mitchell medium
bombers, A-24 Banshee dive bomber, and P-38 Lightning fighters
fly 8 more bombing missions against Kiska pounding Camp area,
gun emplacements, buildings, shipping, and airstrip revetments.
