Taormina taken by 8th Army.

In Italy. Badoglio Government. Declared Rome an open city.

Russian Front. The Wehrmacht tanks and infantry counter-attacked at Kharkov.

Milan target for heavy attack by Lancasters Breda armament works main objective. Mosquitoes bombed Berlin.

The British Admiralty announced that in three months May-July 90 U-boats destroyed and that during 1943 new shipping completed by Allies exceeded all sinkings by 3,000,000 tons.

United States of America President Roosevelt at Quebec.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) P-38 Lightning fighters sweep toe of Italy but find little enemy movement. Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) fighters, medium bombers, and light bombers, 3 hit refuelling depot at Nicola, near Gesso, road junction North of Palmi, shipping in straits and along West coast of Italy North to Gioia, and numerous targets in Northeast Sicily and South Italy as enemy continues orderly evacuation from Sicily to mainland Italy across Straits of Messina. United States troops speed East along coast to Barcellona area and also continue pursuit of enemy East of Randazzo.

Ninth Air Force. 61 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, on loan from Eighth Air Force bomb Me 109 factory at Wiener-Neustadt. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers attack road junctions and vehicle concentrations along Northeast coast of Sicily and bomb crossroads North of Palmi. P-40 fighters hit shipping in Milazzo and Messina area and along Italian coast in Palmi area.

Fifth Air Force. Approximately 60 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers, and B-25 Mitchell medium bombers pound Salamaua area battle zone. With close air and artillery support, United States forces push to crest of Roosevelt Ridge. Enemy retains several ridges along Dot Inlet. A-20 Havoc light bombers strafe barges near Finschhafen. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit barges at Talasea and Rein Bay, and B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Koepang.

Thirteenth Air Force. 9 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb Rekata Bay area.

Eleventh Air Force. 2 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers fly special radar ferret and reconnaissance missions. 1 B-26 Marauder medium bombers, 8 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, and 10 P-38 Lightning fighters then fly 2 attack missions to Kiska, bombing with unobserved results.
