in accordance with mission prescribed by Combined Chiefs of
Staff in Casablanca Directive.
Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). United States Army Air
Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb harbours
at Bizerte, and Trapani, and hit shipping in Straits of Sicily.
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and A-20 Havoc light bombers
bomb airfields at Oudna and Sainte-Marie du Zit. Aircraft
of tactical units hit enemy movements and fly sweep and reconnaissance
throughout Northeast Tunisia following attack during
11-12
April 1943 by British aircraft, mainly in Enfidaville, Zaghouan,
and Bou Ficha areas.
Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24
Liberator heavy bombers of 376th Group, sent to attack Naples
harbour, are prevented by bad weather from bombing primary.
About half return without bombing while the others hit Cosenza
and Crotone. Other heavy bombers of same group, in subsequent
mission, bomb Naples and secondary target of Pizzo. The British
Royal Air Force (RAF) Liberators, under IX Bomber Command,
are dispatched against Palermo. The primary is attacked, in
spite of total cloud cover, but most of bomb tonnage is dropped
in Messina harbour. In ground action, British 10 Corps captures
Sousse and heads North.
Tenth Air Force. 9 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25
Mitchell medium bombers hit airfields at Magwe. P-40 fighters
bomb and strafe ammunition and supply dump at Walawbum.
Fourteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
P-40 fighters strafe more than 20 vehicles 25 miles east of
Loiwing.
Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24
Liberator heavy bombers and B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers
pound airfields at Rabaul and Gasmata, shipping in Saint George
Channel, targets in Ubili and Talasea areas, shipping in Hansa
Bay, airfields at Lae and Nubia, and Bogia harbour. B-24 Liberator
heavy bombers, operating individually, attack several targets,
scoring hits on Madang dock area and at Toeal. Japanese planes
attack Port Moresby in strength but do little damage.
Thirteenth Air Force. Single United States Army Air Force
(USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers continue snooper strikes,
hitting Kahili airfields twice during the evening.
Eleventh Air Force. 3 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, 24 P-40 fighters, and 13 P-38
Lightning fighters fly 7 missions to Kiska. The fighters also
strafe Little Kiska. Antiaircraft fire damages 1 P-40 and
1 P-38 Lightning fighters. The P-38 Lightning fighters force-lands
safely.
