Events On This Day

North Africa. First Army troops entered Kairouan First and Eighth Armies made contact near Fondouk.

In Australasia. Japanese dive-bombers and fighters attacked Allied shipping in Oro Bay, New Guinea.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). During 10-11 April 1943, Wellingtons bomb airfields at Decimomannu and Monserrato. During day, P-38 Lightning fighters carry out fighters sweeps and reconnaissance flights, claiming numerous aircraft shot down, including 21 transports destroyed between Cap Bon and Marsala. B-26 Marauder medium bombers bomb Oudna airfield, B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit Sainte-Marie du Zit airfield, and B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers strike harbours of Tunis, Marsala, and Trapani. Fighter-bombers and lbs blast trucks South of Enfidaville road, trucks East of Kairouan, Sousse docks, and numerous other targets in the Northeast quarter of Tunisia.

Ninth Air Force. Colonel Wycliffe E Steele assumes command of IX Air Service Command, succeeding Colonel John D Corkille. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers attack Naples harbour. Antiaircraft is intense and fighters attack B-24 Liberator heavy bombers from all sides, knocking 1 down. The B-24 Liberator heavy bombers claim destruction of 3 fighters. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers attack motor transport and concentrations North of Sfax as Allied ground troops push toward Sousse.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb Lae and Finschhafen. Single B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Finschhafen 3 times and hit Madang once. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit Vila Salazar and another village on Timor. Enemy aeroplanes attack Oro Bay and destroy 2 merchant vessels.

Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-38 Lightning fighters and Navy fighters strafe gun positions in Rekata Bay area. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb airfields at Kahili and on Ballale Island.

Eleventh Air Force. 4 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, 22 P-40 fighters, and 8 P-38 Lightning fighters hit Kiska 5 times. Last mission aborts due to weather. The other 4 bomb various targets starting large fires. Some fighters strafe Little Kiska.
