Events On This Day

Duisburg bombed in the British Royal Air Force (RAF) heaviest attack to date, 34 bombers missing. Soviet Air Force raided Warsaw railway station.

North Africa. Organised resistance in Tunisia ceased Generaloberst Hans-Jürgen von Arnim and General der Panzertruppe Hans Cramer, commander of Axis forces, captured by British Indian Army's 4th Infantry Division.

Mr Churchill, Roosevelt, and Combined Chiefs of Staff in Washington discuss strategy in light of events in USSR, Tunisia and Aleutians. Other topics are setting date for invasion of West Europe, war plans for European Theatre of Operations
and Mediterranean Theatre of Operations, knocking Italy out of the war, and Central Pacific offensive against Japan.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) Wellingtons bomb docks at Marsala during 11-12 May 1943. Some bombs fall on Mazara del Vallo and Trapani. During day, Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) fighters, light bombers, and medium bombers fly sweeps and tactical reconnaissance over battle area and hit positions South of Bou Ficha which form last link between enemy forces and the sea.

Twelfth Air Force. General Cannon takes command of XII A Support Command.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb targets in battle area in Northeast Tunisia.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb airfields and surrounding area at Finschhafen. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers hit Saumlakki, and single heavy bombers hit Salamaua and Gasmata.

Thirteenth Air Force. During 11-12 May 1943, B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers fly snooper strikes against Kahili airfields. During early morning hours P-40 fighters and Navy aircraft hit antiaircraft positions, runway, and revetments there.

Eleventh Air Force. A United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-39 fighters reconnaissance sortie over Kiska and Rat Islands encounters poor weather and turns back. At Attu, air-ground liaison B-24 Liberator heavy bombers watches United States forces land on beach 'Red' while another B-24 Liberator heavy bombers drops supplies. 7 attack missions flown by 10 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, 12 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, and 24 P-38 Lightning fighters bomb and strafe assigned Attu targets. 4 barges are set afire in West arm of Holtz Bay.
