and single heavy bombers hit Salamaua and Gasmata.
Thirteenth Air Force. During
11-12
May 1943, B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers fly snooper strikes
against Kahili airfields. During early morning hours P-40
fighters and Navy aircraft hit antiaircraft positions, runway,
and revetments there.
Eleventh Air Force. A United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
P-39 fighters reconnaissance sortie over Kiska and Rat Islands
encounters poor weather and turns back. At Attu, air-ground
liaison B-24 Liberator heavy bombers watches United States
forces land on beach 'Red' while another B-24 Liberator heavy
bombers drops supplies. 7 attack missions flown by 10 B-24
Liberator heavy bombers, 12 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers,
and 24 P-38 Lightning fighters bomb and strafe assigned Attu
targets. 4 barges are set afire in West arm of Holtz Bay.
