At night, the British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers heavily
attacked Düsseldorf more than two square miles devastated,
and Munster, 43 bombers missing.
In the Mediterranean. After 13 days of intense bombardment.
Italian island of Pantelleria surrendered with 15,000 troops,
enemy reports indicated 1,000 aircraft took part in final
attack. Lampedusa bombarded from the sea.
In Burma. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers attacked
Rathedaung, Buthidaung and Japanese Headquarters on the Chindwin.
New Argentine Government recognised by Britain and United
States of America.
Eighth Air Force. 168 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
aircraft of VIII Bomber Command hit Wilhelmshaven U-boat yards.
Smaller raid is made on port area of Cuxhaven. The raid on
Wilhelmshaven demonstrates difficulty of operating beyond
range of fighters escort as enemy fighters attacks prevent
accurate bombing of the target.
Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). Attack during
10-11
June 1943 on Pantelleria by Wellingtons is followed by morning
and afternoon attacks by fighters and bombers of Northwest
African Air Forces (NAAF), in conjunction with naval bombardment
of the island.
Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25
Mitchell medium bombers attack islands of Pantelleria and
Lampedusa. Fighters escort the medium bombers to Pantelleria
and fly over during bomb runs. After British 1st Division
is landed unopposed, Pantelleria surrenders unconditionally.
Fourteenth Air Force. 8 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
P-40 fighters hit ramp on the Salween River, trucks at Mangshih,
and warehouses at Tungling.
Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24
Liberator heavy bombers again bomb airfields in Rabaul and
hit targets at Gasmata and along shore of Keravia Bay. B-25
Mitchell medium bombers pound areas along Huon Gulf coast,
hitting Kela Point, Salamaua, and bridge at Nuk Nuk. Koepang
is thoroughly blasted by B-24 Liberator heavy bombers while
Penfoei and Dili airfields are hit by light B-25 Mitchell
medium bombers attacks. P-40 fighters strafe submarine off
Cape Nelson.
Eleventh Air Force. 7 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, 8 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers
, 10 P-40 fighters, 4 P-38 Lightning fighters, and 2 F-5A
reconnaissance aircraft fly weather, photo, reconnaissance,
and attack missions to Kiska. Main targets are Gertrude Cove
and Main Camp, South Head, North Head, runway, and offshore
barges. Fighter bombing and strafing, and subsequent bomber
runs over emplacements, are effectively coordinated.
