Events On This Day

In the Mediterranean. Bombing of Pantelleria continued 37 enemy aircraft destroyed in these and Wednesday 9 June 1943 night's attacks.

Russian Front. Over 700 Russian air force aircraft raided enemy aerodromes, destroying or damaging 150 Luftwaffe aircraft on the ground.

In Australasia. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) Flying Fortresses and Liberators dropped nearly 40 tons of bombs on Rabaul, New Britain.

Germany and Italy recognised new Argentine Government Moscow announced dissolution of the Comintern.

Eighth Air Force. Combined Chiefs of Staff issues directive through Chief of Air Staff (The British Royal Air Force (RAF)), The British Royal Air Force (RAF), marking official beginning of Combined Bomber Offensive (Plan)
of United States Army Air Force and The British Royal Air Force (RAF) against sources of German war power. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) is to bomb strategic city areas at night, and American force to hit precise targets by daylight. Combined Chiefs of Staff sanctions Combined Operational Planning Committee as the agency for coordinating the efforts of the Combined Bomber Offensive (Plan) forces.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). Following attacks during 9-10 June 1943 by fighter-bombers, Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) and Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) aircraft (fighters, light bombers, medium bombers, and heavy bombers maintain all-day attack on Pantelleria. Over 1,000 sorties are flown.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, escorted by fighters, bomb Pantelleria. The escorting fighters dive bomb targets on the island. Later, The British Royal Air Force (RAF) heavy bombers attack Reggio di Calabria airfield.

Fourteenth Air Force. 9 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters on armed reconnaissance strafe 10 barges and a gunboat at Chienli, 1 barge is set aflame. 10 P-40 fighters intercept about 25 aeroplanes over Hengyang; 1 enemy bomber is shot down.

Fifth Air Force. More than 20 B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers and B-24 Liberator heavy bombers pound airfields in the Rabaul area. A single B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bombs town of Sorong and shipping at Kokas.

Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-38 Lightning fighters and Navy fighters claim 4 aircraft downed off North tip of Malaita Island. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers and B-24 Liberator heavy bombers pound airfield at Kahili twice during the day.

Eleventh Air Force. 7 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, 8 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, 12 P-40 fighters, and 2 F-5A reconnaissance aircraft reconnaissance aircraft fly weather reconnaissance, attack, and photo missions to Kiska and Little Kiska. Targets include gun batteries, runway, North Head and Main Camp.
