Mitchell medium bombers, escorted by fighters, bomb Pantelleria.
The escorting fighters dive bomb targets on the island. Later,
The British Royal Air Force (RAF) heavy bombers attack Reggio
di Calabria airfield.
Fourteenth Air Force. 9 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
P-40 fighters on armed reconnaissance strafe 10 barges and
a gunboat at Chienli, 1 barge is set aflame. 10 P-40 fighters
intercept about 25 aeroplanes over Hengyang; 1 enemy bomber
is shot down.
Fifth Air Force. More than 20 B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers
and B-24 Liberator heavy bombers pound airfields in the Rabaul
area. A single B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bombs town of
Sorong and shipping at Kokas.
Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
P-38 Lightning fighters and Navy fighters claim 4 aircraft
downed off North tip of Malaita Island. B-17 Flying Fortress
heavy bombers and B-24 Liberator heavy bombers pound airfield
at Kahili twice during the day.
Eleventh Air Force. 7 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, 8 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers,
12 P-40 fighters, and 2 F-5A reconnaissance aircraft reconnaissance aircraft fly weather
reconnaissance, attack, and photo missions to Kiska and Little
Kiska. Targets include gun batteries, runway, North Head and
Main Camp.
