on South West Germany. Koenigsberg bombed by Soviet air force
aircraft.
North Africa. The British Eighth Army occupied port of Sfax.
In the Mediterranean. Italian heavy cruiser Trieste sunk and
Gorizia damaged by United States Army Air Force (USAAF) Flying
Fortresses heavy bombers in harbour of La Maddalena, Sardinia.
United States Army Air Force (USAAF) Lightning fighters shot
down 30 enemy transport planes in Sicilian straits.
In Burma. Japanese infiltration through the jungle led to
further withdrawal by Allied troops in the Mayu peninsula.
In Australasia. Heavy bombers attacked Japanese base at Wewak,
New Guinea.
Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). During
9-10
April 1943, Wellingtons bomb troops and transport on roads
in area surrounding Enfidaville. The following day, B-17 Flying
Fortress heavy bombers hit ships at La Maddalena while B-26
Marauder medium bombers follow up the Wellingtons with raid
on roads and military concentrations near Enfidaville. Fighter-bombers
also hit ground targets in Enfidaville areas. Fighters escort
bombers, carry out reconnaissance, and fly sweeps over battle
area from Medjez el Bab to Sousse.
Ninth Air Force. Headquarters IX Fighter Command is transferred
to Tripoli. Personnel are to be moved from Egypt, over a period
of several weeks. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb harbour
at Naples. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) Liberators, under
IX Bomber Command control, hit Palermo. Allied ground forces
take Sfax and continue North to La Hencha.
Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17
Flying Fortress heavy bombers and B-24 Liberator heavy bombers
pound town and dock area of Wewak. Some of the B-17 Flying
Fortress heavy bombers also bomb Cape Boram and Kairiru Island,
while some of the B-24 Liberator heavy bombers hit Alexishafen
and shipping on Wewak. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers pound
harbours at Bobia and Uligan. A lone B-17 Flying Fortress
heavy bombers strafes barges Southeast of Bogia and trucks
at Cape Croisilles while another bombs airfield at Arawe.
Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers continue to fly harassing strikes
as 3 of the heavy bombers hit Kahili airfield.
Eleventh Air Force. Weather reconnaissance B-24 Liberator
heavy bombers observed 4 unidentified aircraft near Segula.
3 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, 17 P-40 fighters, and 6 P-38
Lightning fighters fly 5 attack missions to Kiska, and negative
searches for unidentified aeroplanes at Segula. Last mission
finds Kiska closed in and returns with bombs.
