Events On This Day

North Africa. It was announced that prisoners taken during the Tunisian fighting totalled 291,000.

Russian Front. Loss of Oranienbaum, 20 miles West of Leningrad, admitted by Berlin radio.

Vice Admiral, Sir John Henry Dacres Cunningham appointed Commander-In-Chief the Levant.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). Fighters, medium bombers, and heavy bombers of Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) continue pounding of Pantelleria in predawn hours and during the afternoon.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb landing ground at Gerbini and airfield at Catania. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit Pantelleria. Fighters escort bombers and fly patrols and fighters sweeps.

Fourteenth Air Force. 6 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters damage railroad bridge at Puchi and strafe nearby railroad yards.

Fifth Air Force. 2 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb town area of Manokwari and airfield at Nabire. A lone B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bombs Unea Island.

Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers on reconnaissance attack small vessel West North West of Cape Henpan. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers, P-40 fighters, and P-38 Lightning fighters pound airfield at Munda and Vila.
