It was announced that Victoria Crosses have been awarded to Lieutenant. (now Captain.) H. M. Ervine Andrews, East Lancashire Regiment and (posthumously) to Lance Corporal. H. Nicholls, Grenadier Guards.

Greek tanker Hermione under charter to Italian Government, reported sunk by British forces on 28 July 1940. The patrol yacht HMS Gulzar was reported sunk on 29 July 1940 by air attack.

Minister of Economic Warfare announced extension of British blockade to cover whole of Europe and North Africa.

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) made day and night attacks on aerodromes, barges, oil storage plants, and other targets in Northern France and Low Countries.

Coastal Command aircraft attacked gun emrplacements on Norwegian coast. Other aircraft attacked naval base at Emden.

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) made eight raids on Italian positions near Kassala.

Sporadic Luftwaffe raids on Britain. One fighter and two bombers brought down.

Lord Halifax made vigorous protest to Japanese Ambassador against arrest of British subjects in Japan.

Award of Army�s two first V.C.s.

Germans closed German-Swiss frontier.
