Events On This Day

The captain and some of the crew of the Admiral Graf Spee landed at Buenos Aires. Four others arrested by Uruguayan authorities and charged with blowing up their ship.

Face a battle over Healigoland Bight. Twelve Messerschmitt Bf 109 fighters shot down. Seven British bombers failed to return.

The British Admiralty announced that a German cruiser Koeln class have been sunk off the mouth of Elbe by HMS Ursula.

Russians made sudden advance on the Arctic front with massed infantry, tanks and bombers and reached Pitkaejaervi. New Russian attack on Karelian Isthmusalso reported.

German troops reported to be massing on the Luxemburg frontier.

The British Admiralty supply details of exploits of HMS Salmon, announced on 13 December 1939. Besides one German cruiser sunk, two were damaged. Also announced was that 10 ships out of every 1,100 entering or leaving ports had been lost around British coasts during the first 10 days of December. Confirmed that German steamer Antiochia was scuttled during November.

The British Admiralty, and Air Ministry issued a joint statement on attacks by Luftwaffe aircraft with bombs and machine guns fire on merchant and fishing vessels in the North seaon
