History

The 30 mm MK 103 (Maschinenkanone 103) was a machine cannon designed and produced by Rheinmetall-Borsig in 1941. The 30 mm MK 103 was intended for dual use as anti-tank and in air to air combat. The 30 mm MK 103 was of much lighter construction and faster firing than the 30 mm MK 101 however due to its lighter construction it was nowhere near as robust as the 30 mm MK 101, so the ammunition used was modified by reducing the amount of propellant that was used, thus decreasing the strain on weapon. The 30 mm MK 103 was belt fed which allowed for more ammunition to be carried. At the same time as the 30 mm MK 103 was being developed. Also there was a lighter 30 mm MK 108 being developed. There was also a ground variant, which was used in the Flakpanzer IV (Kugelblitz)

The 30 mm MK 103 (Maschinenkanone 103) machine cannon was installed in the following Luftwaffe aircraft
