The 30 mm MK 103 (Maschinenkanone 103) was a machine cannon
designed and produced by
Rheinmetall-Borsig
in 1941. The 30 mm MK 103 was intended for dual use as anti-tank
and in air to air combat. The 30 mm MK 103 was of much lighter
construction and faster firing than the
30
mm MK 101 however due to its lighter construction it was
nowhere near as robust as the
30
mm MK 101, so the ammunition used was modified by reducing
the amount of propellant that was used, thus decreasing the
strain on weapon. The 30 mm MK 103 was belt fed which allowed
for more ammunition to be carried. At the same time as the
30 mm MK 103 was being developed. Also there was a lighter
30 mm MK 108 being developed.
There was also a ground variant, which was used in the
Flakpanzer
