Events On This Day

Fourteenth Air Force. 5 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers knock out 2 bridges in Sinantien area. 14 P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers and P-38 Lightning fighters knock out bridges near Hengyang and Sinshih, damage bridge near Chihsien, and attack shipping and railroad targets around Hankow, Lukou, Sinshih, and Dong Hoi.

Far East Air Force (FEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-38 Lightning fighters and P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers fly ground support in Iguig area of Cagayan River Valley and hit Sabangan. Nearly 50 P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers are weathered out of Kyushu sweep. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Okaseki, Toyohara, and Takao airfields. A-26 Invader light bombers attack Karenko. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and P-38 Lightning fighters supporting Australian forces, hit Japanese forces in areas near Balikpapan, Manggar, and Sepinggang. (Australian and Dutch forces complete encirclement of Balikpapan Bay). Other heavy bombers hit Samarinda shipyards. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers in support of operations in Brunei Bay area bomb Japanese occupied area East of Beaufort.

Twentieth Air Force. During 9-10 July 1945, 475 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-29 Superfortress heavy bomber's attack Sendai, Sakai, Gifu, and Wakayama with incendiaries. 61 bomb oil refinery at Yokkaichi, and 31 mine Shimonoseki Strait and waters at Niigata and Nanao.

Seventh Air Force. 43 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers from Okinawa bomb Omura airfield (1 other bombs airfield on Kikai Island. 50 Okinawa based B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit Tokuno airfield on Tokuno Island.

VII Fighter Command. 100 Iwo Jima based United States Army Air Force (USAAF) fighters hit tactical targets at Itami, Hamamatsu, Aichi, and Washinomiya, claiming 12 air victories and 5 parked aeroplanes destroyed.
