Events On This Day

Twelfth Air Force. Major Gustav M Minton Junior, takes command of XXII Tactical Air Command, which ceases to function. Major Minton continues in the command until transfer to Army Air Forces Service Command, Mediterranean Theatre of Operations (AAFSCMTO) on 12 August 1945.

Fourteenth Air Force. 7 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and 4 P-47 Thunderbolt fighters damage bridge near Anyang, bomb buildings North of Changsha and airstrip at Paoching, and hit targets during road and river sweep from Siangtan to Yoyang. 45 fighters bomb or strafe numerous targets including troops, river traffic, town areas, and supplies in South and East China and knock out bridges at Singtai and Chihsien.

Far East Air Force (FEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20 Havoc light bombers and fighter-bombers hit personnel and defensive positions near Infanta, at Mount Mapatad, in Marikina area, and in other areas in Ipo sector. In the North fighter-bombers pound numerous Cagayan Valley targets and support ground forces North of Baguio and East of Manila. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers pound Brooketon and Muara. Medium bombers and fighter-bombers hit Kudat, Fort Brook, Belait., Jesselton, and Keningau.

Twentieth Air Force. 409 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-29 Superfortress heavy bomber's, escorted by VII Fighter Command P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers, drop incendiary and high explosive bombs on Osaka, hitting East Central section of the city which contains industrial and transportation targets and the Osaka Army Arsenal largest in Japan. Despite being forced to bomb by radar because of heavy undercast, the B-29 Superfortress heavy bomber's burn out over 2 square miles of the city, destroying over 55,000 buildings. 26 other B-29 Superfortress heavy bomber's mine Shimonoseki Strait and waters around Fukuoka and Karatsu.

Seventh Air Force. 24 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers from Angaur bomb boat repair basin on Aurapushekaru Island. 20 P-47 Thunderbolt fighters from Ie Shima hit targets radio station, warehouses, freighter, and motor launches on Kyushu, and claim 5 aircraft downed.
