Events On This Day

Eighth Air Force. Approximately 750 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) heavy bombers attack 6 marshalling yards, 4 bridges, a command centre, a city area, and 14 targets in battle zone of West Germany. 7 fighters groups fly escort and 1 group strafes airfield and transportation targets. 1 group of fighter-bombers bombs Siegen marshalling yard.

Ninth Air Force. 26 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) bombers of 9th Bomber Division strike Prum. Bad weather prevents all fighters operations.

Twelfth Air Force. Bad weather over North Italy grounds medium bombers. XXII Tactical Air Command fighters and fighter-bombers hit rail lines and bridges in Genoa-La Spezia coastline area, and bomb vessels in harbours at Genoa and Imperia.

Fifteenth Air Force. Bad weather precludes all operations except a single reconnaissance mission by 2 P-38 Lightning fighters.

Tenth Air Force. Bad weather cancels all combat missions. Transports manage 310 sorties, landing men and supplies at advanced bases and dropping supplies to front line troops.

Fourteenth Air Force. 40 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters, P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers, and P-47 Thunderbolt fighters pound Hankow Wuchang area. 9 aeroplanes are claimed destroyed. 4 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Cap-Saint Jacques area.

Far East Air Force (FEAF). In the day's major operations, United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Clark Field while B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, A-20 Havoc light bombers, and fighter-bombers blast bridges and targets at Calumpit and Plaridel and in nearby South Luzon areas. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Nichols Field and Nielson airfield. A-20 Havoc light bombers, with P-38 Lightning fighters cover, bomb Carolina airfield. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and fighter-bombers hit Mapanget airfield. Far East Air Force (FEAF) flies numerous smaller strikes against various points throughout Netherlands East Indies (NEI) and Philippine Islands.

Twentieth Air Force. 28 Chengtu based United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-29 Superfortress heavy bomber's bomb aircraft factory at Omura. 13 bomb secondary target at Nanking while 6 attack targets.

Seventh Air Force. 15 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, based at Guam, bomb Iwo Jima airfields. During 6-7 January 1945, 9 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers on individual snooper strikes continue to pound the airfields.

Eleventh Air Force. 2 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Suribachi Bay airfield, also hitting buildings and pier areas. 10 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers fly single air coverage sorties for naval Task Force.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Dartford Area.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit near Hatfield.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Ongar Park Wood.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Deptford.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Northaw.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit West Ham.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Dulwich.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Erith.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Beazley End.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Camberwell.
