Events On This Day

Eighth Air Force. More than 1,000 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) heavy bombers, escorted by 11 fighters groups, bomb 7 marshalling yards, 6 command centres, 3 bridges, railroad lines, along with several city areas and targets in Germany. 2 fighters groups sweep Cologne and Osnabruck areas.

Ninth Air Force. XXIX Tactical Air Command fighters escort VIII Bomber Command heavy bombers. All other command s and 9th Bomber Division cancel operations as weather is bad.

Twelfth Air Force. Weather grounds medium bombers and light bombers. XXII Tactical Air Command fighters and fighter-bombers make 6 cuts on Brenner rail line, damage West end of rail bridge at Cittadella, and hit marshalling yard South of Trento. Most of XXII Tactical Air Command's effort is concentrated against land and water command in La Spezia-Genoa area, including attacks on shipping at Savona and San Remo harbours.

Fifteenth Air Force. Unfavourable weather again curtails operations. 3 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-38 Lightning fighters complete photo and weather reconnaissance missions.

Tenth Air Force. Bad weather cancels all combat missions. Transports complete 383 sorties to forward areas.

Fourteenth Air Force. 5 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Fort Bayard and attack shipping in Samah Bay, claiming 1 vessel sunk.

Far East Air Force (FEAF). In major strikes of the day, large numbers of United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and A-20 Havoc light bombers, supported by P-38 Lightning fighters, hit network of airstrips from Clark Field to Angeles airfield. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Nielson and Grace Park airfields and Nichols Field, and B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and fighter-bombers pound bridges in the Plaridel and Calumpit areas. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers raid Padada and Daliao airfields. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and fighter-bombers hit Lembeh Strait and Langoan areas. Other Far East Air Force (FEAF) aircraft on small-scale armed reconnaissance missions strike targets throughout Philippine Islands.

Seventh Air Force. 11 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, flying out of Saipan, bomb airfields on Iwo Jima. During 7-8 January 1945, 10 more heavy bombers again pound airfields, striking in single-bomber snooper missions over a 7 hour period.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Dagenham.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Teddington.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Tottenham.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Guildford, Hogs Back.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Great Baddow.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Leytonstone.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Cheshunt.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Ilford.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Islington.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Hutton.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Brightlingsea.
