Events On This Day

Ninth Air Force. No bomber operations. IX Tactical Air Command flies patrols and armed reconnaissance, XIX Tactical Air Command flies patrols and armed reconnaissance and operates in concert with XII Corps assault on Linz, and with XX Corps which crosses the Inn River and pushes East and Southeast. XXIX Tactical Air Command sweeps Dessau and Wittenberg areas and attacks shipping in Kiel and Flensburg areas. German forces in the Netherlands, North West Germany and Denmark surrender.

Twelfth Air Force. XXII Tactical Air Command continues flying visual reconnaissance during night and day in North Italy. United States 85th Infantry Division reaches Austrian border near San Candido and pushes on to Brenner Pass at Vipiteno without opposition.

Fifteenth Air Force. No offensive operations. Activity is limited to reconnaissance missions with escort, escort of Mediterranean Allied Tactical Air Force (MATAF) leaflet drops in North Italy, and escort of C-47 Skytrain transport aircraft on supply dropping missions to Yugoslavia.

Fourteenth Air Force. 12 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and 180 fighter-bombers, mostly operating in flights of 2 to 4 aircraft, attack town areas, storage, troops, horses, trucks, river shipping, airfields, and many other targets scattered over vast expanse of South and East China.

Far East Air Force (FEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Tuguegarao area while other B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, A-20 Havoc light bombers, and fighter-bombers, in spite of bad weather, support ground forces in North and South Luzon and on Negros. P-38 Lightning fighters pound Itu Aba Island. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers heavily damage oil installations at Saigon. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and P-38 Lightning fighters support ground forces on Tarakan Island and B-24 Liberator heavy bombers hit Sandakan and Kota Baru and bomb Mandai and Masarnba airfields.

Twentieth Air Force. 47 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-29 Superfortress heavy bomber's attack airfields at Oita, Omura, Saeki, and Matsuyama.

Seventh Air Force. 22 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers from Angaur bomb antiaircraft positions on Koror. 11 from Guam hit airfields on Marcus.

Eleventh Air Force. General Isaiah Davies replaces General Johnson as Commanding General Eleventh Air Force on an interim basis.
